Anberlin is an American rock band currently consisting of lead vocalist Stephen Christian, guitarists Joseph Milligan and Christian McAlhaney, bassist Deon Rexroat, and drummer Nathan Young. The band originally formed in 2002 with Joey Bruce on rhythm guitar. He was later replaced by Nathan Strayer from The Mosaic. He has since returned to The Mosaic and been replaced by Christian McAlhaney.
Anberlin started as SaGoh 24/7, formed by Christian and Rexroat when they were both in high school. They were joined by drummer Sean Hutson and guitarist Joseph Milligan. The band released two albums but didn’t sell much more than a thousand units. Hutson left the band to start a family, and Nathan Young became his replacement.
Anberlin began after the band decided to form a more ‘rock’ sound. They recorded demos which were posted on PureVolume (at the time mp3.com). The band then signed with Tooth and Nail Records.
Their debut album Blueprints for the Black Market was released. In 2005, their second album Never Take Friendship Personal was released and sold over 150,000 copies. Their last album with Tooth and Nail Records, Cities, was released in 2007 before the band announced their signing with Universal Republic.
Since then, the band has released two albums, New Surrender and Dark Is The Way, Light Is a Place, and are currently working on their sixth studio album dubbed Vital.
